The black bill is small with a yellow base. Breeding in Eurasia, Oriental Region: widespread; can be seen in 103 countries.
A lone sparrow arriving may begin chirping to attract other sparrows.
They nest in colonies in tree holes, willow pollards, farm buildings and nest boxes. Its plumage is mainly warm rufous above and grey below.
Breeding in North America: n Canada, Alaska; can be seen in 5 countries. In winter in the northern states, flocks of Tree Sparrows are common in open country. Their white cheeks have a black smudge and they have a small neat black bib.
The tree sparrow, at 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) in length, is slightly smaller than the house sparrow and of sleeker and neater build. Song/Call “Tsuwitt”- A nasal, disyllabic and cheery tone. This sparrow nests and winters farther north than any of its close relatives.
There is another variant of this, which has a disyllabic chirr-up, giving rise to an old English name for the house sparrow, "Phyllip sparrow" where the "phyll-ip" is onomatopoeic.

The back and wings are a mixture of warm shades of brown and the underparts are pale grey-brown.
As well as the breeding period usage of attracting a mate this call is also used to keep the flock aware of where other individuals are.
Despite the name, it is not particularly associated with trees, and many of its nesting areas are on the tundra north of treeline.
