The swan goose (Anser cygnoides) is a large goose with a natural breeding range in inland Mongolia, northernmost China, and southeastern Russia.It is migratory and winters mainly in central and eastern China. There are two colour varieties of this breed: the White Chinese and the Brown Chinese. Chinese geese are available in two colors: brown and white. African geese are similar to Chinese geese in that they are a bit noisier than other breeds. Chinese geese appear in two varieties: a brown similar to the wild Swan Goose, and white. There are two recognized breeds of colored geese from China, the African and Brown Chinese. They are a very alert bird that are also able to fly if startled.
But the females are shorter and stockier. White geese have blue eyes; the distinctive knobs on their foreheads are orange, as are their feet and bills. The Brown African Goose was admitted to the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in 1874. Chinese. The Chinese is distinguishable from other geese by the knob or protuberance on its head.
Chinese geese are a close cousin of the African Goose (see last post), a heavier breed also descended from the Swan Goose. Chinese geese go broody and are the better layers, laying as many as 50 eggs in a season.
Males mature at 10 lbs and Females at 8 lbs. The Brown Chinese geese are an ornamental goose due to their fine features. Brown Chinese Geese originate in China descending from the wild Asiatic Swan goose. Geese form bonds with their mates, and each gander can be mated with two to six geese, depending on the individual birds. They are a beautiful goose and are very active foragers. Brown Chinese geese are the noisiest of the bunch, but are also great egg layers. While many domestic Chinese geese have a similar body type that is slimmer and they are taller fowl. Breeding. The African geese appear in three color varieties, which are Buff, Brown and White. At maturity, ganders weigh about 12 pounds, geese about 10 pounds.
They are good egg producers with above average fertility. African geese are long-lived and will produce for many years under normal circumstances. It is sometimes referred to as the "Swan Goose" because of its graceful manner. And the females have larger keels or lobes. The Brown Chinese goose is a descendant of the Asian Swan Goose and shares some of the same unique traits such as plumage in varying shades of gray and brown, and a knob at the top of the bill. The African ganders often have a higher pitched call than the geese and are taller. The breed is close relative of Chinese goose and has similar knob above their beak. The original variety is similiar to the Brown Chinese Goose. Domesticated from the Swan Goose in Central Siberia over 2,000 years ago, the Chinese Goose is the smallest of all domestic geese. 6. African Geese first appeared in Great Britain in the mid-1800's and were referred to then as "Hong Kong" geese. Sebastopol Geese. Chinese Geese are the most prolific egg laying geese and it is not unusual to have them lay in the fall or winter. There are two varities of the Chinese Goose, White and Brown. Both originated in China and are smaller than the Toulouse or Emden. The African Goose is a hybrid between a Swan Goose and Chinese Goose.
This a very practical breed as they are great weeders, “watchdogs,” good … The brown Chinese goose is known to have a brown colored plumage, while the white ones are known for their orange colored bill. Marked for their twisted, curled and feathery upper regions of the body, the Sebastopol is classified to be an ornamental breed. If well managed, they will reproduce in their first year. The African Goose has been considered a distinct breed since at least the middle of the nineteenth century. Most Chinese geese lay from 50-60 eggs but may produce as many as 100 yearly. Eggs are large, weighing 5-8 ounces, and hatch in 30-32 days. Both the Chinese Goose and African Goose are the result of selective breeding originating with the wild Swan Goose.
